Ti ringrazio      Paola  8 Marzo 1997

Roberto Rustichelli - Auto presentazione

Autopresentazione

Roberto Rustichelli

Enzo Cirone - Testo critico

Mara Borzone - Testo critico

Carla Bagnoli - Testo critico

Pietra come forma: dura, intransigente, acuminata o gibbosa, splendente e opaca. Pietra come presenza immobile.
E poi ancora: in nuvola, ala, freccia, fantasma.

Gianfranco Pangrazio - Testo critico mostra Untitled (stone) Galleria Leonardi V-Idea

Sandro Ricaldone - Mostra "ZAUBERGIPFEL / CIME INCANTATE - Entr'acte

Paola Costa - Critical text letter The Soprana Towers installation

The Porta Soprana Towers installation

Genoa, 1997

Form and setting up:liveliness, chromatic effect(red – grey) ,luminosity, originality of arrangement, scenography, surprise effect, technical skill, combination and processing of materials, recovery of a point of departure, both space and an imaginary language, innovation = these values are evoked
by the suggestively placed ‘inlevation’.
Iconography: the courageous and significant gesture that evidently manifests, so to say, materially, the extent to which we are living on a theoretical or intellectual and even existential level in today’s society.
The crisis of all institutions, the abolition and rejection of any point of reference that wishes to impose a symbolic or ideological value, living or transcendental reference
has meant that necessarily ‘the niche remains empty’, but yet at the same moment it comes just as necessarily filled with something that can be very varied, and have
different values, from those that are simply ironic, to those that suggest a more terrestrial reality, more simple and / or banal with perhaps even a sexual overtone.
Is colouring this ‘new reality’ perhaps the desire to mask? To beautify? Energise?
Or at least to do that which is in the only power of the artist who reveals reality,
but also plays with it.
‘Playing’ with the stone can therefore be very emblematic.
The dilemma remains: in our life can there be only stone, even if it is painted, or
is it itself the manifestation of a need?

Roberto Rustichelli - Self presentation Zurigo

“In general, stone as a mute presence is forced into a dialogue with the other elements present, none are excluded, in a continuous oscillation between the material and the immaterial, the stone becomes an active organism that inevitably expresses symbolic, figurative, evocative values”.

Roberto Rustichelli - self presentation

Self-presentation

I started working in the 1970s on compositions that, due to the type of colour material, could be thought of as referring to the informal Italian. In subsequent works I define “decisive” shapes and signs organised in “scenic compositions” where I maintain, through the use of perspective, marked reference planes, the use of paint and of sign with an evident relationship with the landscape. Later on the constructed perspective changes, the scene flips vertically, the line of the horizon disappears, the reference plane becomes two-dimensional
Signs and shapes take on shadows and are composed almost geometrically all the while maintaining accentuated pictorial sensitisation.
During this period the drawing-sign asserts itself as an expressive need and has the same value as the pictorial composition.
In the early 1980s it is the relationship with matter and the sensitisation of surfaces: I use spray painted colours, nitro paints, shaped wood and other materials; the forms emerge from the substance, the figurative references become tangible, they stiffen and take on a decorative character.
Shapes are geometrised, they take on aspects of relief, now glossy, now opaque, shaded, lacquered, they form organised sets.
During the early 1980s, contemporarily with my compositional pictorial work, I more deeply explore the themes of Industrial Design; the works of this period are characterised by the search for a mediating relationship between structural and functional concepts and my pictorial stylistic features: I design and create some objects of function and scenic objects for which I study aspects linked to of the surface in relation to the shape. Towards the end of the 1980s, my research oriented towards a complete recovery of painting, “forms” return and are further accentuated in volume and in depth, some compositions become three-dimensional objects read on the horizontal plane, whose structure is increasingly simplified.
In the 90s the process of subtraction continued, no longer equivalent forms but the definition of a fundamental autonomous form that prevails in the “field”. In composition the pictorial data is marginal and is reduced to a “thin skin” that covers the subject and its shadow. The need to express harmony in compositions is accomplished through a play of forces that must interact in a non-sentimental way and in a total absence of amazement.
The shapes that follow change and denote a final form, ambiguities no longer exist ‘it is clear they are “stones”!
Stones and shadows, artificially constructed are “described” in detail but are unreal. Their meaning and the composition changes, the dimensional ratios, the support, the colours change. Following works are characterised by the need for three-dimensionalisation.
The stones, their shadows as well as the signs on them and in the “field” on which they are placed, take on more primordial references to further define new relationships in compositions of awareness and of spatiality.
Now the stones suspend their weight without apparent movement, they require air. The “stone form” has long been stabilised in the landscape (its inseparable element) and not only is it a concrete protagonist presence in the “geography” in aerial photos, in geographic maps manipulated to make the idea of landscape coexist with the idea of shape. Suddenly a series of drawings dedicated to the “mountain” shape appear
which are only the idea of them, they go beyond their representation and stop at their signifier. (Celles-ci ne sont pas des montagnes).

The search continues …… Roberto Rustichelli

Enzo Cirone - Critical text

From a couple of years onwards Roberto Rustichelli has been insistently working on the development of one same theme by expanding it in various ways according to a logic of progressive complications. From drawing to painting ,through maquettes up to tridimensional development, the leading form is that of a monolith taking its shape in always different imaginative solutions.

We remind the stone mentioned by Artaud when about Van Gogh, that stone the artist drags with himself as his damnation or destiny ,as something he cannot do without anyway. For Rustichelli it is not only and any longer a question concerning painting, a “painting” stone as for Van Gogh or only a stone to be portraited. For Rustichelli it is a question of measuring himself with an original form investigated in its various appearing modalities or in its showing itself as a matrix, as a sign or sign or index for any other possible form. For Rustichelli it is obvious that the artist’s activity consists in a formative action, it is the activity giving shape to something which has no shape in itself.

If the whole history of Art (from the myth of Hermes encountering the tortoise to the latest experience or art declined in magnetic immateriality) is the history of the possible ways to give shape, in Rustichelli’s works the first level of formativity must be searched in the fully conceptual operation of attributing a leading role to unformed material. Choosing the form of a rock, of a block, of a bigger or smaller stone as the theme of one’s research, means gathering form in its pre-historical origin, in its elementary values of heaviness, obtuseness, wheightiness, materiality and naturality preceding any glance. But as Magritte teaches, also Rustichelli immediately specifies: “This is not a stone”. Designed or painted, overhanging the painting, positioned on a wall or directly on the floor, Rustichelli’s stone becomes a promise for something to come (like the marble the sculptor chooses in the quarry) or the premise for something to happen in the beholder’s space, literally an object, something thrown in front of one’s thought or sight. As the space for one’s waiting the stone is always there: denaturalized because of its improbable colour (never seen such red or blue stones before) or because impossible to be measured in the case of maquettes without the least indication on their real scale.

Rustichelli’s stone stays there and you do not know any longer how to look at it since it has already stopped being a stone when you start to observe it.

Maybe it is a little bit disquieting above all when it overhangs a wall (after all a considerable part of the painted works bears the title “Icons).

You are comforted by the thought that on the whole owing to the roughness of its volumes the stone has still to completely be defined and named: it is only a stone. Rustichelli’s stone is not the monolith of ‘2001 Spaces Odissey’: it is not yet the form smoothed in the absolute black ,the form summarizing in its refinement the remains of history and annulling time and space. The stone is here the primordial condition preceding any creative act, is a meteor whis is still to fall, is a fact (or a manufacture) still to happen. But its power ( its possibility to trasfom itself or to be turned into something else and to become one thousand possible forms) keeps you waiting and fascinates you . Exactly as the artist let himself be charmed when “flattering the stone, in his one thousand ways to imagine it, in his attempt to put it “into images” by redeeming it from the millenary silence of its blind naturality.
The artifice of art starts the sublime fiction of mimesis and reveals that the stone is made out of polystyrene or papier mâché, fiber glass or painted wood. When in front of the painting, you are aware that volumes are only a deception owing to the fading colour.

You perfectly know that the shadows brought onto the maquette (if the meteor lands) are really brought there for ever suggesting a time suspended in a space beyond all contexts. But (and for this reason) you keep watching. The symbolic implication can always be recalled (from the reference to menhir and its mystery to the phallus, anything can be said ) the consequent psychoanalytic implications (always convenient and resolutive in any case) and from these ones you can pass to the literary considerations on the lightness or heaviness of being and its bearableness.
That’s not little. It seems to me that in this case we can attempt the risk of another interpretation (shifting the meaning of the first lines of this text somewhere else) : by stressing the choice of confronting himself with the basic difficulty of unformed material, Rustichelli assumes it not as chaos but a condition from which he starts for working out the rhetoric of making and remaking until reaching perfection.
(Kubrick’s monolith is light-years away).

Marinella Paderni - Critical text for personal exhibition at Galleria Leonardi “V-idea”

“Matter must be elaborated by thought. What does it mean? It means experience, nothing more than experience and the disposal of it. This matters ”.

(Marcel Proust)

Despite the cultural and social evolution of the last two centuries, and particularly the acceleration that occurred in the twentieth century, humanity essentially continues to relate to the Universe and to Life with the same curiosities and fears as our ancestors in the distant past. Technological development does not exhaust the train of philosophical enquiry relating to the origin of life, to the nature of the world and of things. This can only help us to integrate a continuously expanding knowledge and knowing to reveal new horizons or new points of view to us. The problem, however, remains the human drive towards the preservation of life, not withstanding our desire to penetrate the unknown.
In a reality made up of many truths, first asserted then denied or revised, Roberto Rustichelli belongs to that group of artists, who do not stop at the relativity of knowledge of the world.
Throughout his artistic career – even in his most pictorial phase – he has always maintained a very “physical” relationship with objects, in the sense of a marked propensity for the objective component of artistic work and a study of the definition of those elements, which exhaust an autonomous field of meaning.
Starting from the zero degree of reality of an object, he appropriates the object itself by studying it first with sketches and drawings, then representing it three-dimensionally in its full neutrality and in its extraneousness.
The suspension of the object with respect to a given reality, its physical and conceptual manipulation, allows it to be used to cancel the common categories of judgment and activate other modes of perception.
Above all, new relationships form with the object in question, be they of a symbolic and evocative nature, or of a symbolic and formal order.
Rustichelli has been applying this process of redefinition to stone for years. First with repeated and obsessive study of its physical component – drawings and casts of grey or coloured monoliths, reproduced with different materials and with particular attention to their texture, their projection in space, their context.
With respect to light and their shadows – then with its relocation in a conceptual and symbolic key.
The artist says this on the matter: “In general the material stone, as a mute presence is forced to enter into dialogue with the other elements present, bar none, in a continuous oscillation between materiality and immateriality, it becomes an active organism that inevitably expresses symbolic values, signs or the evocative “.
Stone, artificially constructed in a simulacrum of a monolith, has no direct cultural and anthropological references (even if the relationship is inevitable). Rather Rustichelli elevates it to the rank of “icon”, a symbolic image.
De-contextualising it, it takes on primordial characteristics, which allow it to define new relationships of composition, awareness and spatiality.
The artist’s influence establishes the “permanence” of the object. The “stone” icon becomes an original figure, a shape that the unconscious recognises as distinct from the objective world, detached from the natural context. It is now the matrix of something else, now a form from which new configurations can emerge and on to which new symbols may be projected.
As with the four maquette displayed in the exhibition, in which the stone element creates in each maquette an autonomous field of relations between the object and its simulacrum (or its double), the being and the appearing, its aestheticising function and its symbolic value.
Or as in the installation, of great impact, where a stone originally hanging on the wall is followed by a series of white casts of the same produced by the artist (icons of the original matrix), placed on a grassy surface, in a sort of cloning of the natural element and with clear references to reproducibility in art and in nature.
New conceptual configurations sought after by the artist and amplified in the models of geographical maps of Europe, where the serial presence, more or less massive, of drawn white stones looms over the geographic surface.
An alienating vision, but above all an iconic invasion, which brings into play the value of territoriality and uniqueness with respect to the phenomenon of globalisation and reproducibility.
In all of his works, Rustichelli highlights the formative nature of the creative and artistic act, the moment in which the object is no longer a reflection of itself but becomes a form that shapes its surrounds.
As if art can still constitute a bulwark of expressive freedom, research and continuous definition of our being and the world.

Mara Borzone - Critical text

Roberto Rustichelli’s artistic experience begins in the ” fabulous ” eighties, in an atmosphere full of collaborations, aspirations, dreams and ideas.
“Something is changing” was the current theme and at the same time the unfailing conclusion of those debates, rarely reaching fiery tones but rather  showing a certain bewilderment, as it always happens when changes are perceived but their final direction is not clear yet.
Those were years when a lot of painting still circulated, Rustichelli and his travelling companions proposed something different thus anticipating now widespread tendencies: objects as works of art, having the form of telematic totems , real objets supplied with video tapes with virtual images, real video recorders for artistic video recordings.
This research referred to one’s childhood “Rai” antenna projected against a cloudy sky.
In those first telematic totems charged with premonitions, clouds, accurately portraited in tridimensional form built layers thus anticipating a contamination between high-tech and return to nature which is now theme of public dominion.
We cannot exclude that the cloud has become on a subconscious level the main image (but can we call “image” something changing continously?) or the main object (but are clouds real objects since they have no mass, volume or weight, just a rather vague form?) of Rustichelli’s research.
Sometimes the cloud becomes vertical (though it is difficult to prove that concepts like “horizontality or “verticality” maintain their “earthly” meaning also in the sky) and undergoes a sort of petrification.
However it would be wrong  to refer to Rustichelli’s recent works as to a study on stones since in nature there are no plastic stones or petrified ones in the form of a moulding, meteorites from the future charged with semantic ambiguity and absolutely actual doubts.
Both in case of installations or of enjoyable maquettes with menhir-clouds stuck in the ground and representing an imploded and miniaturized world, shadows rather than clouds end by being the real enigma: projected on grounds accurately reproduced in every single roughness and blade of  grass and therefore strongly realistic thus creating, thanks to a series of slightest but perceptible swerves, an effect of charming estrangement.
A refined and cultivated representation of tridimensionality is characterized in every work by dense shadow in De Chirico’s style, impossible but not excessively and also vaguely threatening as if stones had a soul.
Things change if the talk is about clouds, able as they are to project capricious shadows, sudden and difficult to be portraited.
In an era taking little care of shadows owing to the horrible neon light, both contributing to killing the soul of the objects, Rustichelli recovers their potentiality.
In a context worrying less and less about soul, Rustichelli helps us remember that in primitive cultures, shadow and soul were the same entity.
In a world paying little attention to colour as a form of language, this artist from Genoa persists in analysing it, ranging from the sun=yellow to the shadow=blue-violet, in a wide research on assonances-dissonances starting from Mendini’s provocations and becoming increasingly radical, difficult, attentive and rigorous.
The dialogue between violet and orange or between nature and art, the death
of the Modern movement, the doubts on Post-modern, though in its starting
phase: for an uneasy “conversation on taste” Rustichelli looks for something
different from the decorations and faded Victorian colours, something different also from metropolitan desperation dominating in its smoke-grey colour and graffiti.
Moving between the opposites could therefore flow into the search of a pattern which however cannot exist and even if it existed, wouldn’t be universal in today’s world.
Yet on of the possible ways to be experienced (Rustichelli’s research is going in
that direction) could bring to the construction of a canon for the art of the art of the third millennium.

The Brandal center of art and culture

Exhibition by Roberto Rustichelli

Between painting, design and project.
This concept characterises the research into the “languages of art” by Rustichelli.
In his work, the manipulation of form is decisive, forms which re-propose themselves as infinite constants, caught now in a game, where
the elements of decoration and texture prevail, now rigid and severe, imprisoned in a discourse aimed at bringing out the rigour and purity of the form itself.
These forms, indeed, “archetypes” of memory, encode
static game situations, other times, to the contrary, the postponement
is triggered by a dynamic process, the image overflows
it escapes from the stereotypes that generated it, it underlines
and attacks the surrounding space.
Both in tableaux and in physical objects, there exists
an analogous relationship between the pictorial element and philosophy
planning process.
The same stylistic features are adopted, both for surfaces
explored pictorially and elements that evoke
exclusively the shape, thus enhancing a sort of
three-dimensional activation by implementing and exaggerating
a tension between space, form and matter.
Other times function and painting are the primary components
of a single language until the coming about of microcosms of philosophical architecture
which underline the suggestive ambiguity between the object, project and work.

Germano Beringheli - An installation in the Leonardi “V-idea” gallery

An installation in the Leonardi V-Idea Genoa gallery
Rustichelli, from earth and stone, the existential experience.
The archetype and the handcraft, essentially vitality and knowledge, experience and vision, then combined in the quality of making, they are the ingredients of the widespread (and welcoming by evocation) sensitivity with which
Roberto Rustichelli (1953) develops that substance
Art that is immaterial and that still expresses today-through the almost alchemical (transformative) elaboration of vastly different ingredients, experiences and destiny.
Earth, stones, grass confirm a system .(an “installation” in the rooms of the Leonardi V-Idea gallery)

In which the dry and essential visual meaning finds its greatest revealing moment retracing archaeological traces
and moving from the original primariness to the radicalness of
contemporary conceptions. Four examples testify to the assumption of a possible and significant architectural context and above all of a symbolic and recurring structural definition of territory (which does not pertain to Land Art as a hedonistic and aesthetic purpose rather the existential experience of the author), obtained from the alignment of stones (all identical having been produced from a cast) are in fact unprecedented perceptual possibilities. Precisely for this reason the invitation to see Rustichelli’s exhibition is very pressing; useful feedback for distinguishing between so much, perhaps too much, so-called artistic operability, which draws the truth (which adds knowledge to the known)
from the fake.

Carla Bagnoli - Critical text

The simple, essential shape of your stones , which are not just stones, this much is very apparent, and the mutable matter of which they are made, suggest to me something that “looms”, something that is impending, something that is to come and one does not know when, how and why it will happen, something that can be interpreted in multiple ways, it could be something negative but also something positive. Stone is an element with which one can “construct” but also “destruct”… it depends on the use one makes of it … (laying the first stone, a milestone, building stone, tombstone, throwing stones, avalanche of stones, Philosopher’s Stone…). Even the space that surrounds your stones is disturbing… it is a solitary , silent space, with accentuated light and shadow which, in some cases, suggest lunar landscapes. A geometric space. In essence … a hiatus in suspended time… a wait for something unknown in a time devoid of time, a silent space.

Sandro Ricaldone - For a biography of the stone- Critical text

For a biography of the stone

I speak about stones as algebra, vertigo and order; stones as hymns and quincunxes; stones as stings and corollas, on the brink of dreams, catalyst and image…

Roger Caillois

‘I only find within my bones / A taste for eating earth and stones.’ Thus Rimbaud, who satiated his hunger with ‘pebbles, children of the flood.’ ‘To flee poetry and yet recapture the peace of stones …’. So Camus, who wished to be ‘stone among stones’ and in the silence of the desert he surprised their cries. Stones that on their hollowed and chipped surface, in consonance with Calvino, carry a history. A story that has a setting, a beginning, perhaps a time.

Thus, Roberto Rustichelli, who has made stone the unique subject of his research, says, ‘The shape of a stone as a mute presence is forced into dialogue with the existing elements, none excluded, in a constant oscillation between the material and the immaterial. It becomes an active organism that inevitably expresses symbols, signs, evocative values.’ Stone as form: hard, intransigent, sharp or speckled, shiny or opaque. Stone as a still presence. Stone as silence that can be listened to. Forced stone (or perhaps by its own very nature) open to communicate with the elements that surround it, time after time, or correspond to them at a distance, with total inclusivity. Stone that swings between inanimate matter and the dynamic intangibility of the imagination. An organism that reproduces itself in thought, that engenders symbols, that in itself embodies signs and miracles. Stone as matrix of the world, talisman and mirror of the self, hidden in the inner core of the earth. Stone as the archetype of reality?

The element that actually stands in front of this interweaving of motifs, so linked and diversified, without obscuring them, and actually incorporating its fibres and substance, is, so I say, a fragment. A fragment of landscape, a part that metonymically refers to its origin, a stone detached from the quarry or from a blue mountain, the stone picked up along the way, observed and looked at once more, fixed on paper, superimposed and multiplied on canvas. ‘Construction in destruction’ as for Maurizio Fagiolo dell’Arco.

This fragment is not static, it finds relationships with others, it discovers balances that arise from (or are a prelude to) dis-symmetrical precariousness. It is orphaned, but not without roots, even ancestral. It rejects unity. ‘Das Ganze ist das Unwahre’, ‘The whole is untrue’, in Adorno’s words. Will the stone-fragment be the truth of the world?

Rustichelli’s stone ventures out onto the maps of the globe: a pebble wandering between continents, flying over the meanders and estuaries of rivers, emerging from the oceans. It turns, again, into altar, monument, sepulchre. And then again into cloud, wing, arrow, ghost.

The stone flattens in colour. Its surface is bespeckled with dots, grids, stains. A large blue rock stretches out against a red background in the centre of the painting. With its intensity, its size, its position, it takes over the space.

It becomes an unfolded flap, an outline, a circumscribed spot, a blazon. Tangible objectivity: a force at work, ‘another reality’, in Pastreau’s words.

What more is there to say? ‘a pure spirit is growing stronger under the bark of stones!’ as De Nerval wrote.

Gianfranco Pangrazio - Critical text- Exhibition "Untitled"(stone) - Galleria Leonardi V-Idea

When I was a child I used to throw a stone either to see how far I could hurl it or how many leaps I could make it take over the water before it sank. At other times it was a work tool that allowed me to dig the earth or to make it shiny and surprisingly smooth when I happened to have a piece of tuff in my hands … . In short, a stone was inextricably linked to the concept of matter.

Now that I have crossed the threshold into old age, however, observing and contemplating a stone, or rather its shape, through the art and eyes of Roberto Rustichelli, here I am telling myself that its time is unfathomable to me and that Universals have only a metaphorical value for humans. We are in the realm of pure metaphysics, of that which is yet to be investigated ad infinitum. The infinite, another ‘truly’ undefinable concept for us. I am lost in an area where boundaries become uncertain and things, even the most material, may not be what they appear to be.

And so I like to sit here and think when the shape of a stone, or rather, the stone itself is transformed into something else, whether that is possible.

This exhibition is intended to be a concise anthology of Roberto Rustichelli’s artistic output where his works, all untitled, covering approximately fifty years of artistic life, will be shown in no specific chronological order as if they were timeless.

Valeria Martusciello - Critical text - Exhibition " Arte e Design" - Galleria Leonardi V-Idea

Art and Design

The 1980’s can be considered one of the greatest expressions of architecture and design in Italy and worldwide. This period was characterized by critical reflection and projection, aimed at challenging the aesthetics, the materials and the modes of production of the age’s industrial designs.

In this gallery, a selection of “objects” by ROBERTO RUSTICHELLI during the 1980’s is presented, produced and elaborated. His productions, shown in exhibitions, cover the architecture, literary content and design of the 80s.

The debut of Postmodernism corresponded to a destructive event, both physical and metaphysical: the controlled demolition of a building in Saint Louis in 1972, an icon of the broken promises of the Modern Movement design. The ideology of modern architecture, perceived as monolithic, was also split apart. Postmodernism is theorized and contextualized in opposition to the Modern Movement. This concept surfaced in the late 1950’s, and continued for decades. In subsequent years, the features and the language of Postmodernism were delineated by Ernesto Nathan Rogers, Robert Venturi, Paolo Portoghesi, Costantino Dardi, Hans Hollein, Marco Biraghi, Philip Johnson, Michael Graves, Aldo Rossi, James Stiling, Denise Scott Brown, Léon Krier, Ricardo Bofill, Arata Isozaki, Ettore Sottsass, and Alessandro Mendini. While they’re only mentioned briefly in this presentation, their roles and contributions need wider, in-depth study.

In the 1980’s, a blending of concepts occurred, whereby each approach, originating from different sources, resulted in a “contamination”, this impregnated the evolution of Roberto Rustichelli’s concept work and lead to the emergence of neo-modern design by Alchimia Studio.

Studio Alchimia, founded in Milan in 1976 by Alessandro and Adriana Guerriero, was inspired by the most significant architects and designers of the time – among others Andrea Branzi, Michele De Lucchi, Alessandro Mendini, Denis Santachiara and Ettore Sottsass. Ettore Sottsass‘s approach characterized design in the 80’s, and was influenced by innovative reading of artistic and intellectual work, resulting in a desire to immerse oneself in the search for an object, rather than focus on the object itself. From a group of designers at the Milanese house of Ettore Sottsass in 1980, the Memphis group emerged. It was a platform for critical reflection and projection, which gave life to the Postmodern movement. Principal members included Michele De Lucchi, Aldo Cibic, Matteo Thun, Alessandro Mendini, Andrea Branzi, Arata Isozaki, among others.

The exhibition shows the most representative imagines and models, noting bold innovations, traditions and prototypes. The drawings set the artist free from materials and shapes, allow them to explore space, and offer a glimpse in design imagination. The artist is liberated from Vitruvius’ triad “Firmitas, Utilitas, Venustas”.

A physical space is an unlimited expanse where all material objects exist and events occur. It can be described by any set of three linearly independent vectors; the same holds true of the color-space dimension. The Architect and the designer must respect the three linear dimensions, the tangible and the measurable aspects of the materials. The artist can explore the space, blending expressions of creative skill and imagination, into a visual form of emotional power: graphic strategies, geometric patterns, colors,…

The models reconstitute a tangible imagination, which then transforms into a concrete idea.

At Entr’acte, Roberto Rustichelli presents “Zaubergipfel/Enchanted Peaks”, a series of works created between 2012 and 2013 that marks an evolution in his artistic journey.

At the core of his research is the mountain, no longer intended as geographical mimesis, but as “structural intentionality”: a plastic event where matter merges with thought. Moving beyond the Romantic Sublime of Friedrich and Bierstadt, the artist reduces the monumental dimension into minimal spaces , forcing the viewer’s gaze into a tactile scrutiny that transforms contemplation into a physical experience.

The dialogue with the masters of the past is constant: while in Segantini rock is light, in Rustichelli it becomes tectonic pressure and energy accumulation , recalling the solidity of Hodler and the rigorous deconstruction of Cézanne,

The transition from the pencils of 2012 to the density of the wax crayons of 2013  sanctions the definitive detachment  from atmospheric evocation. The peaks release themselves into constructive “spots” , revealing a morphology of the deep through brown tones and pale blue vapors. In this “metaphysical silence ” , the crystallized rock becomes the mirror of a cosmic restlessness, evoking the cinematic image from Interstellar of mountains as ancestral waves. The “Enchanted Peaks” series thus invites us on a journey that goes beyond the tangibility of the real : here, painting does not describe an external landscape , but configures itself as an act of inner exploration ,where the height of the vision coincides with the depth of the spirit.
